What is search engine optimisation (SEO)?
Successful SEO is about driving targeted visits to your website. It's not always about ranking highly in search engines, (although that obviously comes into it), but about return on investment, as all good marketing should be. You know you're doing well at SEO if you know what your target audience - The ones that will take action, not the tyre kickers - are typing into Google. All your optimisation (with an 's') should be lead by this fact.

You might think you need to rank highly for the term 'widgets' when in fact, the less competitive term 'small red widgets' will provide you with the kind of traffic that more commonly make a purchase. Ranking for ‘small red widgets’ would therefore provide you with a better ROI and you'd be far happier about that.
